Will propane gas leak from the tank if the connection is too tight?
I work at a distribution center and drive some stupid machine around that is fueled by propane. Recently, while changing out a tank, when I made the connection like usual gas leaked from it and continued to leak for several minutes, after it stopped I assumed it was ok to turn it on and I did and thats when the gas really started flowing out. So changed the tank again, thinking maybe I just got a bad tank, but again it did the same thing with the next tank. I got the mechanic to help me out and he said I made the connection too tight between the cylinder and the vehicle and thats what caused the leak. So I'm just trying to get some clarity, can connections that are too tight cause leaks? And also what are the chances of the tank actually exploding when I change them out. I know little to nothing about propane or the tanks. Probably a dumb question but any info would be great.
More than likely the machine you're talking about has a bad O ring (gasket). I have worked with propane fork trucks and have had the same problem,there is a gasket in the tank nozzle and possible one in the machines nozzle. We would take one of them out and it would seal just fine.
As far as it being to tight,all that means is your tighten it so much it slips the o ring out of place,and for the tank to explode while changing it,as long as there isn't any spark or flame it will be ok
